Crime map data
The crime map uses open public safety and crime data from official or official-derived sources for the UK, USA, and India. UK searches may be sent directly from your browser to the public police API when direct mode is enabled. USA and India views may be loaded from cached backend or Supabase tables so the app can serve leaderboard and map data quickly.
Reported UK crime locations are anonymised by the police and are approximate, not exact addresses. India crime data is aggregate state or city statistics, not individual incident points. Public data may lag current events depending on the source publication cycle.
Location permission
If you choose "Use Current Location", your browser may ask for location access. Coordinates are used only to run your crime search and are not stored on our servers in direct API mode.
Analytics and session replay
We use analytics tools including Microsoft Clarity, Google Analytics, and Vercel Analytics to understand site performance and improve the product. These tools may collect information such as pages visited, browser and device type, approximate region, clicks, scrolls, and other interaction events.
Microsoft Clarity can provide heatmaps and session replay recordings. Clarity masking should be configured so sensitive text and form inputs are not visible in recordings.
Search history and local storage
The web app may create a random browser session ID in local storage. This helps save searches, saved postcodes, feedback, and local subscription state without requiring an account. You can clear this data by clearing your browser storage for this site.
Optional backend features
News, media upload, face search, feedback, subscriptions, and alert features are optional features that may be disabled remotely. When enabled, those features require a backend and may process content or contact details you submit.
Remote configuration
Feature availability is controlled through Firebase Remote Config so we can enable or disable parts of the app without redeploying the website.
Licence and data sources
UK crime data is reused under the Open Government Licence v3.0. USA crime statistics are sourced from FBI Uniform Crime Reporting data. India crime statistics are sourced from National Crime Records Bureau reports via Indian Data Project.
